Intrigued by Beretta Carbine thread below - quick ?s

Hi all -

Interested in Beretta Storm 9mm as I just bought a S&W M&P 9.

Can anyone tell me if it is NY legal? It would appear to be to my (very noob) eyes.

Best place to order on-line?

Anyone know of a better 9mm carbine?

Thank you !

Seeing as you mentioned "noob"....

I don't know if it is legal in NY. Doubting it though.

As you know you can't order it online. You'd have to get it from an FFL. So I'd contact the gun shop (FFL) where you bought the pistol and ask them about the CX-4.

I've heard or read of numerous people liking the carbine. Maybe there is a better one, I don't know.

My wife and I enjoy our CX4 in 9mm. They are fairly popular, so they can be pricey. They should be legal in NY with a 10-round mag. Get one that takes Beretta mags (plentiful).

Beretta forum:http://www.berettaforum.net/vb/

I also like the Ruger PC-9, but they are no longer made. Still around, but good luck finding one. They point more like a rifle/carbine and easy to mount a scope, if so inclined. Accurate, sturdy-built and take Ruger P85 mags or Mecgar.

Try: http://www.gunbroker.com/ for new/used Berettas or Rugers.

I have ordered dozens of guns online.

You have to "go through" an FFL at the end but you can order them online. And pay for them online. Then you go pick them up at your FFL and pay him his $20. My local sales tax is 9.5% so ordering a thousand dollar gun online saves me $95 right there. That doesn't include the fact that it is usually 10-20% cheaper online compared to some local store. Some local store that probably doesn't even have the gun I want to order for any price!

I've bought guns off gunbroker, gunsamerica, and the For Sale forums of S&W forums and Ruger forums. Plus a bunch of other online direct sales companies. Plus all the places you can buy C&R guns from and those ship straight to your house!

Yes, I thought I could order online and have shipped to the FFL where I bought pistol. $60 here though!

I've been thinking about one of these as well.
Maybe for my girlfriend in a SHTF scenario she could have the carbine and a Beretta 92 to keep mags the same and avoid confusion.
I've heard the 92s are not very reliable though, but maybe switching out some springs could do good things for them.

Avoid cheap aftermarket ones like Pro-mag or earlier govt. contract Checkmates (pre-2003--later ones with smoother parkerizing are good).

I am also looking at this stainless trigger/hammer/spring upgrade: http://www.sierrapapacx4.com/

I rented a CX-4 at a local range here. Wow this is what I call a tack driver. As I remember on the first mag, my brother put all 10 in the bulls eye. On my first mag it was 9 out of ten. This was at 75ft.

We both shoot maybe 100rds a month from our handguns. So not very much really.

Good choice.

My experience with M92s in the US Army is that the issue isn't really reliability. With good mags and good ammo, they work. The problem is grip size. I've got medium size hands and I've never been comfortable with them. They are large and so round in cross section that I don't "index" properly with them. And the reach to the DA trigger is lengthy. I end up shifting my trigger finger when going from DA to SA. And I'm a regular size guy. Most women have real problems with this handgun. Sure, there are women that can use it effectively but they are rare. It's not the recoil or anything like that, it's just the grip size!

I've looked at the CX-4's before. It's a good idea. I just wish the .45 ACP version came with something besides 8 shot mags! They really should have made it work with Glock or HK mags. If I could use my HK45 mags in one, I would be sold. If I could use Glock 21 mags, same thing!

Seriously tho...the Storm is a well made firearm. If you stick with either Beretta or Mec-Gar (who makes Beretta's mag I do believe) you should be good to go.

If you mean NY state and not NY city they are legal. I live in NY state and bought mine here, the local gunshops still carry them. According to what I've heard they aren't legal to use with over 10 round mags (being post ban guns) so watch out for that.

FYI in over 700 rounds of mixed factory ammo and lead bullet reloads I have not had a single malfunction with this gun (9mm). The trigger pull is it's weakest point for me, but it isn't that bad. It's light and handy and a lot of fun to shoot.

Be aware that there are three versions of the CX4 Storm 9mm you could run into out there, and the difference is the pistol clip they accept. One is for the 8000 clip (which should be rare to come across), and there's one that takes the PX4, and one that takes the 92 clips. With all that, it would have been nice if one took Glock clips, but no such luck. One of these with an EOTech dialed in right, is so accurate to 100 yards, it's hardly a challenge. 20 round clips are available. For lefties, it is symmetrical, and is designed to easily change from a right handed, to left handed gun.

While we are discussing Beretta 92 mags for the CX-4...

These are fine mags. MDS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Beretta. I own several of these and they are the exact same as the Beretta Factory mags you would order.

Can anyone explain if one one type of magazine is better than the other? I don't own a Beretta pistol (S&W M&P 9) so that is not an issue for me. Which to buy ?

I don't believe it matters at all, if you don't already have a Beretta hangun or have no plans to. Just in case, you should check out a 92 and a PX4 and see which one you'd be more inclined to get in the future. If you buy from a store, chances are they'll only have one or the other in stock, so that could help you decide too. Here's a place online where I got some good accessories for mine, including 20rd clips: http://www.houtsenterprises.com/cx4.html

Factory magazines are normally good to go but aftermarket magazines can range from great to junk depending on who made them. Mec Gar for example not only sell magazines under their name but also make the factory issue magazines for several gun manufacturers. However there are cheapies out there made by companies whose Q&C and tolerances aren't too good and can cause ftf malfunctions.
